US news: Who’s driving gay/lesbian acceptance?

Interesting post here at The Society Pages on a gallup poll asking questions about ‘acceptability of gay and lesbian people’

Money quote here:

Who is driving this increase in acceptance of homosexuality? Other than young people, that is, and the move to the words “gay” and “lesbian.”

Gallup offers some really interesting answers to that question.

First, men are driving it. Women are only marginally more supportive of homosexuality today compared to 2006. But men, especially young men, but older men too, are significantly more supportive. A full 14% of men have changed their mind in the last four years! Women started out more supportive than men, but men have caught up.

Of course, this is America, which is, frankly, bonkers, when it comes to lgbt issues - the Overton window has been pushed so far to the right on this issue that the radical evangelists have met up with the KKK (if they were ever apart) and every time someone manages to put gay marriage on the statue book in a state, the knuckle draggers and mouth breathers of the right set up ‘Family Values’ commissions, provide blanket coverage of TV ads which state that gay marriage will lead ineluctably to polygamy, paedophilia, bestiality, necrophilia and voting Democrat.

So the fact that they’re not quite so revolving-eyed, foaming-mouthed mad, isn’t such great news, but it’s better news than if the numbers had gone the other way.
